You've booked your dumpster, your renovation project is ready to go — and the last thing you want is to finish the job only to find your driveway scratched, gouged, or cracked where the dumpster sat. Driveway damage from dumpster rentals is more common than most homeowners realize, and it's almost entirely preventable. Here's what causes it, how we prevent it at APES Demolitions, and what you can do on your end to keep your driveway looking its best.
Why Dumpsters Can Damage Driveways
A 15-yard dumpster weighs roughly 4,000–5,000 lbs empty. Loaded with renovation debris, it can easily reach 7,000–8,000 lbs. That weight is concentrated on four small metal wheels — and when those wheels are dragged across asphalt or concrete during placement or pickup, the result can be deep gouges, surface cracks, or permanent indentations.
The risk is highest in three situations: hot summer days when asphalt softens, older driveways with existing micro-cracks, and decorative concrete or paver surfaces that weren't designed for heavy equipment loads.
What APES Demolitions Does: Skid Pads on Every Delivery
Our standard practice — not an add-on
Every APES Demolitions dumpster delivery includes skid pads — heavy-duty plastic boards that we place under the dumpster's wheels before setting it down on your driveway. This is standard on every single delivery, at no extra charge.
Skid pads are thick, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) boards, typically 1–2 inches thick and about 2 feet wide. They sit between the dumpster's metal wheels and your driveway surface. When we lower the dumpster, the wheels land on the pads — not directly on your concrete or asphalt. When we pick up the dumpster, the wheels slide smoothly on the pads rather than dragging across your surface.
Prevents wheel gouges
Metal wheels never contact your driveway surface directly
Distributes weight
Spreads the dumpster's load over a larger surface area
Smooth placement
Allows controlled sliding during delivery and pickup
Protects all surfaces
Works on asphalt, concrete, pavers, and decorative finishes
Summer heat protection
Prevents wheels from sinking into softened asphalt
Zero extra cost
Included on every APES Demolitions delivery, always
Best Placement Spots for Your Dumpster
Even with skid pads, choosing the right placement spot makes a difference. Here's how to pick the best location:
Flat, level surface
A dumpster on a slope can shift or roll. Choose the flattest part of your driveway.
Away from overhead wires
Our truck needs clearance above the dumpster. Check for power lines, tree branches, and roof overhangs before we arrive.
Close to your work area
The closer the dumpster is to where you're working, the less hauling you'll do. Think about the path from your demo site to the dumpster.
Street placement is an option
If your driveway is too narrow or sloped, we can place the dumpster on the street — but you'll need a permit from your municipality. Call us and we'll walk you through it.
Avoid parking on grass
Grass placement is possible but the weight can kill the lawn and create ruts. Skid pads help, but it's not ideal for extended rentals.
Additional Tips to Protect Your Driveway
Beyond skid pads and smart placement, here are a few more things you can do to protect your driveway during the rental period:
- Place plywood sheets on the ground between your work area and the dumpster to create a protected path for wheelbarrows
- Avoid dragging heavy items across your driveway — use a hand truck or dolly
- In summer, try to schedule delivery and pickup during cooler morning hours when asphalt is firmer
- If you have a freshly sealed driveway, wait at least 30 days before placing a dumpster on it
- Keep the area around the dumpster clear so our driver has room to maneuver during pickup
What If My Driveway Gets Damaged Anyway?
With skid pads and proper placement, driveway damage is extremely rare. But if you're concerned about a particularly delicate surface — like stamped concrete, pavers, or a brand-new driveway — call us before we deliver. We can discuss the best approach for your specific situation and make sure we take every precaution.
We've been serving Montgomery County since 2021 and our reputation is built on doing the job right. We'd rather spend an extra 10 minutes on placement than have a customer unhappy with their driveway after the job is done.
