How to Rent a Dumpster for a Roofing Project

Shingles are heavier than you think. Here's how to plan it right.

Roofing projects are one of the most common reasons homeowners and contractors rent dumpsters in Montgomery County. Old shingles, felt paper, flashing, and rotted decking need to go somewhere — and a dumpster parked right next to the house is by far the most efficient solution. But roofing debris has some unique characteristics that affect how you plan your rental. Here's what you need to know.

How Heavy Are Roofing Shingles?

This is the most important thing to understand about roofing dumpsters: shingles are extremely heavy. A standard bundle of three-tab asphalt shingles weighs about 60–80 lbs. A square of shingles (100 sq ft) requires 3 bundles, so that's 180–240 lbs per square.

Shingle weight by roof size:

1,000 sq ft roof
~1,800–2,400 lbs
Close to our 1.25-ton limit
1,500 sq ft roof
~2,700–3,600 lbs
Likely over weight limit — call us first
2,000 sq ft roof
~3,600–4,800 lbs
Multiple loads or special arrangement needed

*These are single-layer estimates. Double-layer (re-roof over existing) doubles the weight.

Call us before booking for large roofs

Our 15-yard dumpster includes 1.25 tons (2,500 lbs). For roofs larger than 1,000 sq ft, or any double-layer tear-off, call us at (484) 657-9230 before booking so we can discuss the best approach — sometimes two smaller loads is more cost-effective than overage fees.

Best Placement for a Roofing Dumpster

Placement matters more for roofing than almost any other project. The goal is to position the dumpster so shingles can be tossed or slid directly from the roof into the container — minimizing the distance they travel and reducing the risk of debris scattering across your yard.

  • Position directly below the work area — If you're tearing off the back slope, put the dumpster at the back of the house. If it's the front, position it in the driveway as close to the house as possible.
  • Use a roof chute if available — A roof chute (debris slide) channels shingles directly from the roof edge into the dumpster. This keeps your yard clean and speeds up the tear-off significantly.
  • Leave room for the truck to access — Our delivery truck needs to pull up alongside the dumpster for pickup. Make sure there's a clear path — don't park cars behind the dumpster.
  • Skid pads protect your driveway — We place skid pads under the dumpster wheels on every delivery, so your driveway won't be scratched or gouged even with a heavy shingle load.

What Roofing Materials Go in the Dumpster

✓ Accepted

  • Asphalt shingles (3-tab and architectural)
  • Felt paper / underlayment
  • Flashing (aluminum and galvanized)
  • Drip edge
  • Ridge cap shingles
  • Rotted or damaged decking (plywood/OSB)
  • Gutters and downspouts
  • Fascia and soffit boards

✗ Not Accepted

  • Asbestos-containing materials (pre-1980 homes — test first)
  • Solar panels (require special recycling)
  • Skylights with mercury (older models)
  • Hazardous insulation materials

Asbestos note for older homes

Homes built before 1980 may have asbestos-containing roofing materials. If you're unsure, have the materials tested before tear-off. Asbestos shingles require licensed abatement and cannot go in a standard dumpster.

How Long Do Roofing Projects Take?

Most residential roofing projects are completed in 1–3 days. Our 8-day rental period gives you plenty of buffer for weather delays, material delivery timing, and cleanup. If you finish early, call us for an early pickup.

For contractors doing multiple roofs in sequence, call us to discuss a recurring arrangement — we work with roofing crews throughout Montgomery County regularly.
