A garage cleanout is one of those projects that's been on the list for years. You know it needs to happen. The problem is that without a clear plan — and a place to put everything — it's easy to start, get overwhelmed, and quit. A dumpster changes that. Having a 15-yard container sitting in your driveway creates a deadline and a destination. Here's how to do it right.
Step 1: Sort Before You Toss
The biggest mistake people make with garage cleanouts is going straight to the dumpster without sorting first. You'll end up throwing away things you'll regret and keeping things you should have tossed. Before the dumpster arrives, do a quick sort into four categories:
Keep
Things you actively use
Donate
Good condition, someone else can use
Sell
Worth money on Facebook Marketplace
Toss
Broken, expired, or useless
The "toss" pile goes in the dumpster. The "donate" pile can go to Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Goodwill, or local Facebook groups. The "sell" pile goes on Marketplace before demo day — anything that doesn't sell in a week goes in the dumpster.
Step 2: Schedule Delivery for the Day Before You Start
Have the dumpster delivered the day before your cleanout starts. This gives you a place to stage items and start loading without waiting. Call APES Demolitions at (484) 657-9230 and we'll work out the best delivery time.
We'll place the dumpster in your driveway using skid pads — heavy-duty plastic boards that go under the wheels to prevent scratching or gouging your driveway surface. The dumpster will slide smoothly into position without leaving any marks.
Step 3: Load Smart — Heavy First, Fill Gaps
Garage cleanouts typically have a mix of heavy items (old tools, metal shelving, concrete blocks) and bulky lightweight items (cardboard boxes, plastic bins, old furniture). Load in this order:
- 1
Heavy metal and tools first
Old toolboxes, metal shelving units, car parts, and concrete blocks go on the bottom. Use the swing door to walk them in — don't try to lift them over the side wall.
- 2
Large furniture and appliances
Old refrigerators, workbenches, and large furniture go in next. Remove doors and drawers first to reduce bulk.
- 3
Flat items layered in
Old plywood sheets, drywall, and flat panels pack efficiently when laid flat. Alternate with loose debris.
- 4
Fill gaps with small items
Boxes, bags of junk, loose hardware, and small debris fill the voids. Crush cardboard boxes completely before loading.
- 5
Light bulky items last
Plastic bins, foam insulation, and lightweight items go on top. They compress slightly and fill the remaining space.
