Bathroom remodels generate a surprising amount of debris. What looks like a small room quickly fills a dumpster once you start pulling out tile, drywall, the vanity, the toilet, the tub, and the flooring. At APES Demolitions, bathroom remodels are one of our most common dumpster rental jobs in Montgomery County — and we've seen every scenario. Here's a complete guide to handling your bathroom demo debris the right way.
How Much Debris Does a Bathroom Remodel Generate?
A typical single bathroom remodel (60–80 sq ft) generates roughly 2–4 cubic yards of debris. A full gut-out — everything down to the studs — can produce 4–6 cubic yards. Our 15-yard dumpster has plenty of room for a single bathroom, and even handles two bathrooms comfortably if you pack efficiently.

Loading Order: How to Fill Your Dumpster Efficiently
Bathroom debris has a mix of heavy, dense materials (tile, porcelain) and lighter bulky items (drywall, vanity cabinet). Loading in the right order makes a big difference:
- 1
1. Tile and cement board first
These are your heaviest items. Load them flat on the bottom of the dumpster. Use the swing door to walk them in rather than tossing them over the side — broken tile is sharp.
- 2
2. Toilet, tub, and fixtures next
The toilet and tub are awkward but manageable through the swing door. Place the toilet on its side and nestle it against the tile base. A cast iron tub is very heavy — you may want two people for this.
- 3
3. Drywall and backer board
Break drywall sheets into 3–4 ft sections before loading. Flat sheets pack much more efficiently than whole panels tossed at angles.
- 4
4. Vanity cabinet and countertop
Remove the doors from the cabinet first and stack them flat. The carcass can go in on its side. Laminate countertops break apart easily.
- 5
5. Fill gaps with small debris
Grout, broken tile pieces, plaster chunks, and small hardware fill the voids between larger items. Don't leave air pockets.
Watch Out for the Weight Limit with Tile
Tile is heavier than it looks
Ceramic and porcelain tile weighs 4–6 lbs per square foot. A 100 sq ft tiled bathroom floor and walls can easily add up to 600–800 lbs of tile alone — before you add the toilet, tub, and drywall. Our 15-yard dumpster includes 1.25 tons (2,500 lbs), which is plenty for most bathrooms, but if you're doing a large tile job, keep the weight in mind as you load.
Safety Tips for Bathroom Demo Loading
- Wear heavy gloves when handling broken tile — edges are razor sharp
- Wrap sharp tile edges in cardboard or old towels before carrying to the dumpster
- Use a hand truck or dolly for the toilet and vanity — don't carry them in an awkward position
- Cast iron tubs require two people minimum and should be broken up with a sledgehammer before loading if possible
- Wear a dust mask when breaking up drywall — drywall dust is a respiratory irritant
- Keep the swing door closed when not actively loading to prevent debris from falling out
- Don't overfill — keep debris below the fill line marked on the inside of the dumpster
How We Protect Your Driveway During Delivery
Every APES Demolitions delivery includes skid pads — heavy-duty plastic boards placed under the dumpster's wheels before we set it down on your driveway. This prevents the metal wheels from scratching, gouging, or cracking your concrete or asphalt surface. It's standard on every delivery, not an add-on. Your driveway will look exactly the same after we pick up the dumpster as it did before we dropped it off.
