Every APES Demolitions dumpster has a rear swing door — a full-width hinged panel that opens to give you ground-level access to the interior. It's one of the most useful features of a roll-off dumpster, and one of the most misused. Used correctly, the swing door lets you walk heavy items straight in without lifting them over the 4-foot side wall. Used incorrectly, it can cause injury or damage. Here's everything you need to know.
What Is the Swing Door?
The swing door (also called the rear door or walk-in door) is a hinged panel at the back end of the dumpster. It spans the full width of the container and swings outward on two heavy-duty hinges. When open, it creates a ramp-like entry point at ground level — or close to it, depending on how the dumpster is positioned.
The door is secured by two steel locking bars that run horizontally across the door face. These bars slot into brackets on each side of the dumpster and are held in place by gravity and friction. Understanding how these bars work is the key to opening and closing the door safely.
How to Open the Swing Door
- 1
Stand to the side, not directly behind the door
Before you touch the locking bars, position yourself to the side of the door — not directly behind it. If debris has shifted against the door during loading, it can push the door open suddenly when the bars are released. Standing to the side keeps you clear.
- 2
Check for debris pressing against the door
Look through the gap at the top or sides of the door. If you can see material pressing hard against it, be extra careful — open slowly and be ready to step back.
- 3
Lift the locking bars out of their brackets
Each locking bar has a handle or loop at one end. Lift the bar upward and outward to disengage it from the side bracket. Do one bar at a time. Keep one hand on the door while you release the second bar.
- 4
Control the door as it swings open
Hold the door as it swings outward. Don't let it swing freely and slam against the dumpster side — this can damage the hinges and create a loud impact that startles people nearby.
- 5
Prop the door open if needed
If you'll be making multiple trips in and out, prop the door open against the side of the dumpster or use a piece of lumber as a doorstop. Don't leave it swinging freely in the wind.
How to Close and Latch the Swing Door
Closing the door properly is just as important as opening it safely. An improperly latched door can swing open during transport, creating a serious hazard.
- 1
Make sure no debris is blocking the door frame
Before closing, check that nothing is sticking out past the door opening. Debris caught in the door frame will prevent a proper seal and can damage the door.
- 2
Swing the door closed firmly
Push the door closed until it sits flush in the frame. You should hear and feel it seat properly.
- 3
Engage the locking bars one at a time
Lift each locking bar and slot it back into the side bracket. The bar should drop into place under its own weight. If it doesn't seat easily, the door may not be fully closed — push the door in more firmly and try again.
- 4
Test the latch
Give the door a firm push outward to confirm both bars are seated. If either bar pops out, re-engage it. A properly latched door should not move when pushed.
When to Use the Swing Door vs. Tossing Over the Side
Use the swing door for:
- Heavy items (tile, concrete, appliances)
- Awkward or bulky items (toilets, tubs, furniture)
- Sharp items (broken glass, tile edges)
- Anything you can't safely lift above your waist
- Wheelbarrow loads of debris
- When you're working alone
Tossing over the side is fine for:
- Light debris (drywall chunks, wood scraps)
- Small items you can easily lift
- Loose material in buckets
- When the door area is blocked
- Shingles being slid from a roof
Safety Rules: Never Do These
Before We Pick Up: Close and Latch the Door
When you're done loading and ready for pickup, make sure the swing door is fully closed and both locking bars are engaged. Our driver will check before hooking up, but a properly latched door makes the pickup faster and safer for everyone. If you're having trouble with the door mechanism, call us at (484) 657-9230 — we're happy to walk you through it over the phone.
